Jane Walker A Line in Thread

Sat, September 12, 2026 - Sun, November 22, 2026

Jane Walker uses stitching in painting. Initially she used stitched lines to give a different character to drawn lines. Over time the stitches and texture they make have developed further with added collage and cuts into the paper or canvas. Some of her canvases have a deep texture but it is not made with thick paint, in fact she uses watercolour techniques. The cities that appear in her work are often based on Sheffield, where she lives, but there are quite a few of Paris and Stuttgart. Her viewpoint is high up looking down on the city.

A recent turn in her work is using stitching to remember the coal industry both in South Yorkshire and the Saarland in Germany. Her imagery moves on a sliding scale between abstract and real or imagined places, but not in an unfocussed way; more that images are transient they come and go in the process of painting.
